There are about 1500 species of ficus plant with over 800 of which are trees. Most of these trees produce aerial roots and figs, some more than others. Ficus trees are one of the most rewarding trees to work with as bonsai because they are very forgiving, fast growing and the leaves are very easily reduced. This tree can be grown indoors with adequate light. However, best results are to grow it outdoors. This helps keep the leaves small, the moss growing green. Their aerial roots will grow down from the branches and connect with the ground which makes the great for root over rock bonsai styles. Similar to a banyan tree roots.
