A Three-Year Program in Design, Technique & Tree Evolution

The Artisans Bonsai School is a long-term, structured bonsai education program created for students who want more than short workshops or quick results.

This school focuses on how bonsai truly develop over time through correct technique, artistic judgment, and careful observation of how trees respond across multiple growing seasons.

Classes meet once per month for four hours and follow a progressive three-year curriculum, allowing students to apply techniques, observe real biological responses, and refine their trees as living works of art.

A Preview of the Work and the Value of the Program

The Artisans Bonsai School is built around the idea that bonsai is learned by working deeply, not by skimming across techniques or styles.

Throughout the program, students will dissect each fundamental bonsai style, refine real trees over time, and apply correct techniques so that every tree is placed on a clear, long-term path toward becoming a true bonsai—one that could ultimately be presented in a show setting.

This is not about memorizing styles. It is about understanding why a tree works, why it fails, and how to guide it forward.

Deep Study of Bonsai Styles

Students will work in depth with the core bonsai styles, including:

• Formal and informal upright
• Slanting and windswept
• Broom style
• Cascade and semi-cascade
• Twin trunk and multi-tree compositions
• Forest and raft styles
• Literati and expressive forms

Each style is treated as its own design problem, with attention given to:

• Trunk line and movement
• Branch placement and hierarchy
• Proportion and balance
• Negative space and visual flow
• Style-appropriate structure and refinement

Trees are not rushed into a finished look. They are guided into correct structure so refinement can occur naturally over time.

Refinement & Structural Development

A major focus of the school is taking trees to the next level through correct refinement practices.

Students will learn how to:

• Evaluate existing structure and identify weaknesses
• Correct design flaws instead of hiding them
• Build strong primary and secondary branch structure
• Improve taper, movement, and balance
• Refine trees with long-term development in mind

Every decision is made with future refinement and presentation as the goal.

Advanced Bonsai Techniques

Throughout the program, students will apply advanced techniques as part of real tree development, not as isolated demonstrations.

These include:

• Grafting for branch placement, correction, and improvement
• Air layering to correct proportions, and create new material
• Trunk splitting and heavy bending to create movement and taper
• Raffia use to protect bark during major structural work
• Repotting strategies based on tree health, timing, and design goals
• Deadwood Creation to create believable jin and shari, reading live veins, and understanding when deadwood enhances age and character based on species and natural conditions
• Pot selection to support balance, proportion, and visual harmony

Techniques are taught with emphasis on timing, restraint, and tree response.

Design, Judgment & Critical Thinking

More than anything, this school is about developing critical thinking.

Students learn how to:

• Read a tree before acting
• Decide what work is appropriate and what should wait
• Adapt design decisions to the material in front of them
• Apply principles instead of copying formulas
• Understand cause and effect across multiple growing seasons

The goal is not to teach students what to do, but how to think like a bonsai artist.

Access to Quality Training Material
To ensure every student can fully participate and continue progressing, students will have the opportunity to work on select Artisans Bonsai Nursery trees during class sessions when appropriate. This gives students access to quality material and real design challenges, even if they do not currently have the right trees to train at home. Students also have the option to bring their own trees if they want to continue developing and refining the material they are working on at home. Students should plan to bring their own basic supplies such as wire, soil, tools, and other working materials. However, for convenience, Artisans carries the necessary bonsai supplies on-site and students may purchase anything they need before or during class.

Why a Three-Year Program?

Bonsai is learned through cause and effect, not instant results.

Over three years, students will:

• Apply techniques and observe how trees respond
• Learn how timing affects health, structure, and design
• Experience three full growing cycles
• Understand when to act—and when not to
• Watch designs evolve rather than “finish”

Three years is the minimum timeframe needed to develop real understanding of:

• Structural change
• Ramification
• Healing and scarring
• Energy balance
• Long-term refinement

Enrollment Commitment

Enrollment requires a minimum one-year commitment.

Students may continue year-to-year or complete the full three-year program. This commitment ensures:

• Consistent progress
• A cohesive learning group
• Long-term tree development instead of short-term styling

This is not a drop-in workshop series.

Recommended Background

The Artisans Bonsai School assumes students already have basic bonsai knowledge.

Completion of an Introduction to Bonsai course is strongly recommended, or equivalent experience.

Students should already be comfortable with:

• Basic bonsai terminology and common styles
• Fundamental pruning concepts
• Basic wiring (wire selection, angles, safe bending)
• Watering, light exposure, and fertilization basics
